ACTIVE MINDS

Active Minds is a student group exploring issues relating to Mental Health at Naropa. They are looking to find ways to support the community in dealing with these issues.

Right now I am reminded how difficult it can be both for a person who is struggling and an ally of a person who is struggling. Please try to support this group if you can.

Here’s the information:

We Shall Remain Film Series

Snow Lion! It is Monday and tonight we will be watching the second film in the series, We Shall Remain. This documentary reveals the haunting and profound life of a stubborn and courageous warrior.

"In February of 1909, the indomitable Chiricahua Apache medicine man [Goyathlay meaning "One Who Yawns"] Geronimo lay on his deathbed. He summoned his nephew to his side, whispering, “I should never have surrendered. I should have fought until I was the last man alive.” It was an admission of regret from a man whose insistent pursuit of military resistance in the face of overwhelming odds confounded not only his Mexican and American enemies, but many of his fellow Apaches as well." --We Shall Remain film description

Afterward we will have a discussion about the film, the man and the legend.

The New and Improved Wireless, or is it?

So the new wireless has been up for a while and people mutter complaints now and then, but not one single person has let anyone know what exactly isn't working for then. This either means the wireless is working perfectly, or that no one cares enough to do more than complain to their friends. There is now a wireless problem form next to the maintenance requests. Use it. The new wireless is fast and reaches everyone's apartment. It's like a cheetah that can run through walls but doesn't eat your groceries.

Tips for carving your pumpkin:

1: Do not sever any digits
2: Cut the top at an inward angle so it doesn't fall into the pumpkin when you replace it
3: Scrape the insides good, it will keep your pumpkin from rotting so fast and attracting bugs
4: Draw before you cut
5: Save the seeds, they're good! Wash, roast, salt n butter to taste
6: fake candles only please, Im giving out a few of them, but they're cheap at any store.
7: Have fun.

Love This Life

I wanted to send out a mass email to the snow lion community informing those about my dear friend, Ali. Ali was in a terrible car accident 2 weeks while driving home Tuscon to Phoenix. Jaws were used extricate her from the car. Another friend of mine Jessica, was ejected from the car in the car seat still buckled. Jessica is alive and doing awesome. Her injuries were very minor. Ali was not so lucky. She has had a large section of her left skull removed to reduce brain swelling. This was very successful. Ali is no longer in a medically induced coma however, she is still in a coma due to brain damage. This week is very crucial to her future. She has made some progress. Although she has had a tracheotomy and is on assisted breathing, she has been breathing 14 breaths on her own per minute. This is how much the average person breaths!! The statistics are discouraging. 20% of people with Ali's injuries can be functional but likely not fully recovered... the other 80% are semi-vegetative or vegetative for life. However, my friend is a very strong girl and i faith she will get through this. She needs lots of prayers, positive thoughts, and love.

Ali gave me this manifesto that she admires when i moved to Colorado, two years ago. It is something i read everyday and take to heart especially in a time like this. I would like to share it with the community to inspire others to appreciate every moment they are alive and well.

LOVE THIS LIFE.....

is about celebrating the moment

and that we're not guaranteed or owed another day

and how cool it is that what we hide

can actually be the fuel towards our glory

and that it's not so bad being proven wrong

LOVE THIS LIFE...

is about welcoming the blind turn

and the possibility that

there's no such thing as coincidence

and that empathy is incredably sexy

and that its never to late to pick up a guitar or a paintbrush

or to make an amend or to make a new friend

LOVE THIS LIFE ...

could be about rekindling a past flame

or igniting a new one

or shapeshifting from a dreamer into a doer

or savouring the caress of a love long gone

LOVE THIS LIFE......

means whatever it is you want it to mean

because

LOVE THIS LIFE.....

is a celebration of you and your path

LOVE THIS LIFE ....

cause it could go at any second.

If anyone would like to read more about my friend's story her webpage is

She truly is an angel. One of the best people i have ever had the honor of knowing.

Fleeting Beauty

from Andy Sethi, photos from Charlie
I was amazed and moved to see residents turn the courtyard into a expressed vision of art. The level of artistic talent was incredible and the willingness to share it with the rest of the community freely shows a real generosity of heart for all those who participated and appreciated the mural. I think the rain was timely actually. It reminded me of the Tibetan sand mandalas, in which several monks spend days creating complex works of art out of colored sand. As soon as the creation is finished, the entire thing is swept away as a lesson in impermanence. It elicits the question, how do we give our best effort, knowing that, in the end it will all be washed away? Recognizing impermanence and letting go of attachment to outcome doesn't mean apathy or ambivalence. I think a true expression of love means giving of oneself completely without any expectation of holding onto the results. The giving itself can be the reward.

Peas4Peace

from Moriah Arnold [anopenroadishope@hotmail.com]

The Peas4Peace Guidebook

What is Peas4Peace?

Peas4Peace is a grassroots movement based off of Food Not Bombs. Thirty percent of food in the US and UK is wasted. That is enough to feed 1.5 billion of those who are hungry. Our goal is to keep that food from the landfill and get it to the people who really need it. Food is something that everyone has in common and through Peas4Peace, we hope to establish a large sense of loving community based off of this common ground.

Dumpster Diving and the Farmers Market Pick-up.

*All findings from diving and the Farmers Market should be dropped off in the backyard of 1810 Walnut Street (on the corner of 18th and Walnut) on Saturday night.

Guidelines for Diving: Meet in the Snow Lion Lobby at 10PM on Saturday.
-The divers should be split up into two groups of three (or more), including one person with a car per group.
-Wear dark, loose clothing, and make sure at least one person in your group has a flashlight!
-Dig in! Make sure to look inside the dark colored bags for the freshest food from the day. Do not make a mess around the dumpster! It should look as it was when you found it.
-Always avoid dumpsters with people around them, especially people in cop cars.
-Good places to dive include: Donut and bagel shops, Panera Bread, Sunflower Market, and Vitamin cottage. Whole Foods is a bad place to dive. Farmers Market Pick-Up-Arrive at the Farmers market at 1:45 on Saturday and ask each vendor if they have any leftover food they are willing to donate to Peas4Peace. This is our main source of food, so a car is very helpful.

Cooking, Serving, and Cleaning

Cooking: f you have signed up to cook, arrive at 1810 Walnut St, on the corner of 18th and Walnut, at 9AM on Saturday.
-The food will be waiting in the backyard, so work with your fellow chefs to develop an easy recipe using what was found. Soups, baked veggies, and salads are usually a good idea. All of the meals must be vegetarian.
-You have until noon to cook, so make as much food as you possibly can!

Serving: If you plan on serving but not cooking, be sure to arrive at 1810 Walnut St. by 11:30.
-Once you get there, pile all of the food into the car and take everyone over to the Bandshell on Canyon and Broadway to begin serving. People will start arriving at 12. Don’t forget the dishes!
-Try to stay on the same level as those who are eating to prevent it from turning into a charity act. You can continue serving until all of the food is gone.

Cleaning: Please arrive at 1810 Walnut St. by eleven thirty to help clean up. This is one of the most important parts. Thanks for helping!

What Else Can You Do?

-There will be meetings periodically during which we will create a volunteer schedule for the upcoming month. In the meantime, please feel free to show up at any of these events (diving, cooking, cleaning, farmers market, serving) to help out!

-Talk to a local restaurant or grocery store about donating their leftovers to Peas4Peace.

-Show up to the servings! They are every Sunday at noon, at the Bandshell on Broadway and Canyon. The more people we can get to join us for free food, the more awareness is raised around the issue of food waste.

-Bring your creativity. In order to make the Sunday gathering more of a community event, Peas4Peace is looking for people to play music, set up info stands, read poetry, do portraits, and whatever else you feel would bring energy to the event.
